Tension As 2023 Presidential Election Petition Trial Begins
There is palpable tension in Nigeria as the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Trial commences today.
At the time of filing this report, NewsOrient Network reports that the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, had arrived to personally witness the commencement of the epic trial.
Also present at the court as at the time of filing this reports was Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, who was the Director-General of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Presidential Election Campaign Organisation.
The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, sitting at the Court of Appeal consist of a five-member panel of judges and is headed by Justice Haruna Tsammani.
Other panel members include Justice Stephen Adah, Justice Misitura Bolaji-Yusuf, Justice Boloukuoromo Moses Ugo and Justice Abbah Mohammed.
According to Channels Television, “Justice Tsammani-led’s panel had said it would commence its pre-hearing session today with three petitions.
“They are the petitions by Action Alliance (AA) marked: CA/PEPC/01/2023; Action Peoples Party (APP) marked: CA/PEPC/02/2023 and Peter Obi & Labour Party (LP) marked: CA/PEPC/03/2023.”
It would be recalled that after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 Nigerian Presidential Election, major opposition parties, led by the Labour Party (LP) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) headed to the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, alleging, among others that Tinubu did not win the said election, that the result announced by INEC is different from the authentic result and that even with the INEC announced result, Tinubu failed to win 25 percent of the result of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, a condition they alleged is made mandatory by the laws governing election of President in Nigeria.
As the trial commences today, barely days to the May 29 Presidential Inauguration date, there is obvious tension across the country over the outcome of the trial.
