Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufa’i, has resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress. He also defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In a statement he issued today, Monday, 10th March 2025, El-Rufai accused the current leadership of APC of “straying from the progressive ideals of its founding members.”

He said: “At this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish.

“I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).”

Considering the visible roles he played in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaigns ahead of the 2023 Election campaigns, El Rufai was considered a major stakeholder in both APC and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government.

But since the government’s inauguration, El Rufai had been visibly sidelined or dumped in the scheme of things, leading to various speculations.

With his exit and formal expression of disappointment on the leadership style of the APC government, it seems some of the speculations may be true after all.
