The Emerging Reality Of A Sea Port In Abia State
15th May 2026, NewsOrient, Opinion, Column , Governance And Development By Emeka Nwosu, PhD.
Long before now, discussions had been going on in different Igbo circles and on various social media platforms as to the possibility of building a sea port within the South East to serve the economic interests of the people of the region. Many critics have tended to dismiss the whole idea, claiming rather ignorantly that the South East is land-locked and, therefore, does not have any access to the Atlantic Ocean.
For these critics, the idea of a sea port anywhere in the South East is seen as a pipe dream that amounts to chasing shadows.
The implication is that the Igbo businessmen and entrepreneurs who dominate the import and export trade in Nigeria would continue to rely on the Lagos ports and wharfs notwithstanding the huge bottlenecks and difficulties they face in moving their goods from the ports through the dilapidated and dangerous Nigerian highways to their industries and warehouses in the East and vice versa.
Beyond the precarious roads, are countless security check points mounted by several uniformed organizations which mainly serve as extortion points.
The Igbo businessmen who feel the pinch have continued to lament their plight with no one coming to their aid. They have, thus, been bearing their pains in silence.
It is against this background that the decision of Governor Alex Otti to explore the possibility of building a sea port within the Azumini-Obeaku axis of Abia State is being received with so much joy and enthusiasm.
The governor was recently reported to have given an approval for an immediate feasibility study of the sea port being proposed for the Azumini-Obeaku riverine corridor which is the shortest maritime route to the ocean.
The feasibility study is being undertaken with the assistance of maritime experts to confirm the possibility of such an economically significant project in the Ukwa area of Abia State.
The proposed Azumini Sea Port is approximately 19 nautical miles from the Atlantic Ocean. This makes it the shortest maritime distance to the sea when compared to other sites like Oguta and Oseakwu in Imo and Anambra States respectively.
Governor Otti who has shown so much vision in the economic development of Abia State, is one who does not believe in half measures. He is thorough, methodical and intentional in his approach to governance. He believes in processes and procedures.
He has, accordingly, engaged relevant federal institutions like the Nigerian Ports Authority and Ministry of Blue Economy to ensure that all necessary certifications are in place.
The project would require the dredging of the Azumini blue river from the point it empties into the Atlantic Ocean to enable large vessels to come into the proposed port.
This, definitely, has huge financial implications. It is probably because of this reason that the Abia State Government is exploring the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) approach in the execution of the project.
It is indeed heartwarming to note that the government is engaging with China Harbor Engineering Company Limited, a global player in the maritime sector.
The firm has a track record, having participated in the construction of the Lekki Deep Sea Port in Lagos State. There is no doubt that this kind of collaboration would go a long way in fast-tracking the delivery of this vital project.
The Azumini-Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterway Corridor project is a highly commendable initiative which would go a long way in opening up the South East to the world and boosting its economic fortunes when it becomes a reality.
The economic potentials of this project can only be imagined. The opportunities are huge, especially in the areas of economic diversification, youth employment, career development and skills acquisition.
It will also come with multiplier effects, spurring the sprouting of downstream enterprises within and around the project site.
Governor Otti should go a step further by enlisting the support of the other State Governors in the South East since the project would be serving the economic interests of the entire region.
Their involvement would help to create the necessary synergy and regional weight required to overcome possible obstacles and landmines that may come from outside the zone to stall the project.
Otti should also seek the partnership of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) as this falls within its regional development mandate.
The participation of these entities would help to reduce the financial burden on Abia State.
We applaud the thoughtfulness and strategic vision behind this impressive project.
May Abia continue to prevail!
