Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nyesom Wike, who is a former Governor of Rivers State, has said he has “no regret working against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 Presidential Election election.”
He said this amidst the tensed power play between him and his estranged political son and serving Governor of Rivers State; a development that led the ruling party, the PDP, to lose woefully to APP in the just concluded local government election.
That is not all the loss. The State has for sometime now become a theatre of political violence even as some local government headquarters have just been burnt by hoodlums.
The roots of the face off in Rivers State can be traced partly to his roles in the 2023 General Elections in Nigeria, when Wike, then a serving PDP Governor, led some other PDP governors to openly work against their party’s Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Their actions have been blamed by some analysts as one of the major factors responsible for Atiku’s loss in the election.
Wike, denied doing anything wrong made his no regrets declaration on Channels Television’s Programme, Politics Today.
He denied engaging in anti-party activities by refusing to support Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the then PDP presidential candidate.
According to Wike, his decision was taken “for the sake of justice and fairness.”
A report sourced from Channels Television quoted him as saying: “For presidential election, I said I am going to support equity, fairness and justice. In the other one, I am going to support my party and that is why we won the governor, National Assembly election…
“For presidential, I have no apologies because I don’t believe in injustice.
Today people say ‘discipline Wike, he did anti-party.’ I did not do anti-party,” Wike said.
