Your Speech Is Out Of Touch With Reality, NLC Tells Tinubu

Nigeria Labour Congress has dismissed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s special broadcast as seemingly out of touch with reality.

In a statement on Monday, just some hours after Tinubu’s special broadcast to Nigerians on his plans to alleviate the suffering of the citizens, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said “the promises and assurances made by President Tinubu is not the silver bullet that Nigerians expected”.

He said: “The speech indeed appears to be out of touch with reality and anomalous with the hardship and suffering that most Nigerians are going through now.”

The NLC said considering the current suffering in Nigeria, worsened by removal of fuel subsidy, what Nigerians expected to hear from Mr President was his plans to resuscitate public refineries which have been left to lie comatose for so many years. Unfortunately, he was completely silent on the issue.

As a result, NLC insisted it could not see commitment on the part of the federal government to resolve the situation.

It would be recalled that Tinubu summarily removed subsidy on petrol during his inauguration speech on May 29, 2023. The immediate result was, a litre of petrol which sold at N184 on that day of his swearing in, jumped to over N620. As would be expected, food prices and the prices of other goods and services have jumped to unprecedented heights.
