Since members of the Lagos State House of Assembly finally impeached the Speaker, Hon Mudashiru Obasa, today, there has been debate over the real reason he was impeached.

As was earlier reported by Channels Television, Obasa was “accused of multiple statutory and financial infractions,.”

One of the allegations levelled against the long serving Speaker about a month earlier was that he “spent N17 billion to fix a gate that leads to the Assembly.”

But besides such allegations, some keen observers have alleged that Obasa’s impeachment is a major prelude to the 2027 Governorship Election permutations in Lagos State.

Although this was not mentioned during the impeachment exercise, Mr Gboyega Olatunde, a political analyst, told NewsOrient that Obasa’s impeachment is one of the hard political moves that must be made in order to make way for Seyi Tinubu’s participation in 2027.”

“If you have followed the political growth of Hon Obasa in Lagos State politics, you will understand why some powerful interest groups may want to cut the wings of Hon Obasa early enough before the 2027 political game begins properly,” he said.

He added that “Obasa is seen by many as one of the favoured for the governorship of Lagos State in 2027 but for the powers that be to allow his impeachment is a strong signal that so much may have changed.

“For some of us, it adds credence to the speculation that Seyi Tinubu may indeed contest in 2027,” he said.

Meanwhile, NewsOrient reports that Obasa was immediately replaced by his Deputy, Mojisola Meranda who represents Apapa Constituency 1. Mojeed Fatai becomes the new Deputy Speaker.
