China, today, Wednesday, April 9 2025, announced that it will be imposing 84 percent tariffs on US imports, up from 34 percent it had earlier proposed, upping the ante in a trade war that is setting the two world’s super economies against each other.

Just hours after similar levies by the United States of America came into force, Beijing announced through it’s Ministry of Finance that “tariff rates on imports originating in the United States would “rise from 34 percent to 84 percent”, effective from 12:01 pm on Thursday, in response to the US measure which is already causing a reverberating effect across the world.

NewsOrient reports that President Donald Trump, who returned to power on February 20 after four years, after lossing re-election in 2020, had unleashed high tariffs against the country’s traditional trade partners across the world, including Nigeria which it slammed with 14 percent hike.

The response from China is coming against a punishing 104 percent duties on imports of Chinese products.

Beijing, which has consistently opposed tariff rises, said Wednesday it would take “firm and forceful” steps to protect its interests. Beijing said: “The tariff escalation against China by the United States simply piles mistakes on top of mistakes (and) severely infringes on China’s legitimate rights and interests.”

It continues: “Washington’s moves severely damage the multilateral rules-based trade system,.”

In a separate statement it added that it would “blacklist six American artificial intelligence firms, including Shield AI Inc. and Sierra Nevada Corp, companies, which had either sold arms to Taiwan or collaborated on “military technology” with the island, the commerce ministry said.
