25th September 2024, NewsOrient, News, Law And Society, Governance And Development
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally approached the Senate, praying for confirmation of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
NewsOrient reports that Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read President Tinubu’s letter bearing the prayer during plenary on Tuesday.
In the letter, Tinubu cited Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers him to appoint the CJN based on recommendations from the National Judicial Council, pending Senate approval.
The President expressed confidence in her nomination and urged the Senate to act urgently.
It would be recalled that Justice Kekere-Ekun has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria about a month now when the former CJN, Justice Ayo Arewola retired.
To swear in Justice Kekere-Ekun as Acting CJN, Tinubu had to cut short temporarily a foreign trip.
