A former Speaker of the Nigeria’s House of Representatives, who was also a former Governor of Sokoto State, Hon Aminu Tambuwal, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) have accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of currently destabilising the opposition in Nigeria.

Tambuwal spoke on Friday when he was featured as guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, hosted by Seun Okinbaloye.

He alleged that the APC and President Tinubu have intentionally plotted the fall of the opposition parties in Nigeria.

On it’s part, African Democratic Congress (ADC) alleged that the Federal Government of Nigeria, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is using security operatives to intimidate opponents.

Tambuwal said on Channels Television: “When you look at what is happening in various political parties in Nigeria today — you don’t need to be told, no matter the amount of denial by whoever, including President Bola Tinubu, that they are not involved in destabilisation efforts of opposition parties. It is incorrect.”

He added: “I am not accusing them. I am saying they are involved in efforts aimed at destabilisation of opposition parties,” he stated.

When asked of facts to back up his allegation, Tambuwal answered, “I am saying, I am not suspecting. They are involved in all of this.”

Reacting to Police authorities’ recent invitation of former Kaduna Governor, a chieftain of the coalition of opposition movements, Nasir El-Rufai, and other leaders of ADC in Kaduna State over alleged public disturbance, the spokesman of the coalition party, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement on Friday, faulted the police summons.

He condemned the treatment of El-Rufai and some leaders of the ADC in the North-West state, and the attack on the convoy of an ex-Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

According to ADC, “these police actions are a coordinated effort to stifle opposition politics in areas where the ruling party feels threatened by the ADC’s rising influence.”

Ahead of 2027 elections, the opposition, as part of efforts to curtail the ruling APC, have floated a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The coalition has become a strong opposition that has brought together major political voices across the country.

Major political leaders associated with the coalition include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who was the Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023 elections, former Governor of Anambra State and the Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr Peter Obi; El Rufai, ex-Osun Governor, Rauf Aregbesola; ex-Senate President David Mark; former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, among others.

In it’s reaction, however, the ruling APC has continued to dismiss the coalition’s efforts as not being a threat to it.

President Tinubu, for example, during APC’s last convention, dismissed it as a “sinking ship” and “a coalition of confusion.”
