A youth group, Eastern Democracy Watch, has called on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Benjamin Kalu, to stop his incessant foreign travels and concentrate on the legislative assignment his Bende Federal constituents and the people of Nigeria elected him to do.
In a press release, signed by the group’s leader, Comrade Aneke Uzuakpunwa, and made available to newsmen in Enugu on Saturday, the group said the endless foreign trips embarked upon by the Deputy Speaker “yields no dividends to Nigerian nation that is currently struggling financially.”
Aneke Uzuakpunwa wondered why the Deputy Speaker
seems “hell bent on embarking on more foreign trips than his immediate boss, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and even more than Nigerian President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose endless foreign trips is already noted as a huge minus to his administration.”
The activist advised the Deputy Speaker and other top public officials to stop wasting public funds on unnecessary foreign trips.
He said: “Mr President and other top public officials, like the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Benjamin Kalu, should cut frivolities and live the way their government preaches to Nigerians to live.
The Deputy Speaker in particular should stop wasting tax payers money as this was the same way he organised a hollow gala night for his peace in South East project instead of spending tax payer’s money to organize more meaningful security summit in South East Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Since he emerged the
Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Hon Benjamin Kalu’s several foreign trips have become a source of controversy just like that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
These trips often involve attending unending international parliamentary forums, engaging in discussions with foreign governments and organizations, in the name of promoting Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.
Commenting on this, Eastern Democracy Watch said it is sheer waste of tax payer’s money. The group said: “The question the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives must ask himself and answer it truthfully is what constitutes his primary responsibility as a lawmaker? Should he labour to make himself Nigeria’s prime image maker or a good lawmaker out to save groaning Nigerians?
We think he should work hard to make good laws for Nigerians and allow those appointed to promote Nigerian battered image to do their jobs.”
