Nigeria’s House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected the Commander of the Federal Republic, (CFR) National Honour which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced in his Independence Anniversary speech to be conferred on the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

The lawmakers said instead of CFR, President Tinubu should confer on the office of the Speaker, the National honour of “Grand Commander Of the Order of the Niger (GCON) which he intends to confer on the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

According to them, the office of the Speaker is higher than that of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) who is to be conferred with GCON.

NewsOrient reports that the rejection of the proposed National Honour was made public when the House adopted a motion moved by the Deputy Spokesperson of the House, Hon Philip Agbese, with 248 others during plenary in Abuja.

The lawmakers at the Green Chamber also took exception to the impression that their House is inferior to the Senate, also called the Red Chamber.

They formally rejected the situation in Nigeria where the Senate President is regarded as the Chairman of the National Assembly and therefore superior to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, arguing that Nigerian Constitution recognized equal bicameral legislature.

Based on these, the lawmakers insist that the Speaker should be given the same National Honour scheduled to be given the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
