Sanwo-Olu Apologizes To Lagosians Over Traffic Gridlock As FG Orders Reopening Of Independence Bridge

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has apologized to Lagosians over the severe traffic gridlock that trailed the closure of the Independence Bridge for repair work since yesterday, Wednesday, 2nd April 2025.

This is even as the Federal Government has responded to the outcry of the stranded road users and has ordered immediate reopening of Independence Bridge in Lagos.
“The Ministry hereby express regret for the inconvenience caused to the motoring public by the closure and appealed for their understanding and cooperation,” the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, O.I Kesha, said.

NewsOrient reports that the gridlock has been so severe that thousands of vehicles got grounded in the area between Wednesday evening and Thursday when this report was filed in for publication.

We also report that on Thursday morning, Lagos State Government also apologized to affected road users when Governor Sanwo-Olu visited the area to inspect the level of work.

Acknowledging the suffering of road users, the governor apologized to Lagosians over the traffic situation. He tendered the apology today, Thursday, April 3 2025, when he and the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, visited the area to inspect the progress of work done so far.

There, the governor admitted that the government should have ensured adequate awareness before commencing the repair exercise.

As Governor Sanwo-Olu puts it: “First, I think what is appropriate is really to first tender apologies to all our citizens and to all Lagosians for the very, very difficult, heinous traffic that we experienced in the last 24 hours in the city and within the island of Lagos….”

“I think this apology is important so that we can take full responsibility as a government, both at the national and sub-national levels, for just taking our people through an unfortunate incident.”

The Governor urged Lagosians to plan on how to overcome the difficulties, explaining that the repair work is necessary, given that Independence Bridge is the about the oldest bridge of it’s type in Nigeria and requires repairs.
