Reactions On Fire Outbreak At WAEC Office

– No One Was Trapped, Says WAEC As More Nigerians React

By Wisdom Samuel

As Nigerians continue to express concerns over early reports that many people were trapped in the high rise building of the Lagos office of West African Examination Council (WAEC) while the mysterious morning fire on the facility raged, the council has said nobody was trapped and that all the people in the building were successfully evacuated.

Also, at the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire has not been officially ascertained though early  reports speculated electrical spark or power surge.

On the lives of people in the building, a report in Premium Times quoted the Acting Head of the Public Affairs Unit of WAEC, Mrs Moyosola Adesina, as saying the situation was under control

.

She said; “Yes, the fire outbreak was noticed at the headquarters this morning and the fire fighters were quickly invited.

“I can confirm to you that everyone in the building was successfully evacuated and that the fire has been put out.”

It would be recalled that WAEC, a few days ago, launched digital platform for certificate collection and retrieval, an innovation that attracted mixed reactions from across West Africa.

In his reaction to the incident, Mr Bisi Olatunde, an educationist in Lagos State told NewsOrient that ‘it is curious that WAEC office should be on fire few days after it introduced a new digital system that will help reduce bureaucracy though some people seem stoutly against it. I think this type of incident should make us, as a people, to always prepare for emergency.”
