The Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu SAN, has given up the ghost.

He died at the age of 67.

Details of the immediate circumstances surrounding his death is still scanty but some reports said the Ondo State Chief Executive died in Lagos on Wednesday.

Akeredolu, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), won his re-election as Ondo State governor in October 2020.

But since he was sworn in for a second term in office as the Executive Governor of Ondo State in February 2021, his governance has experienced challenge due mainly to failing health condition.

The resultant intrigues came to public knowledge in January 2023. He later went on medical leave overseas in June and stayed months abroad.

The matter was however not helped by his return in September as he curiously chose to settle in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Some concerned stakeholders could not appreciate how he could govern Ondo State from Oyo State capital city, Ibadan.

Observers who suspected his health condition may have worsened were somehow proved right when on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, he proceeded on another medical leave and wrote a notice formally transferring power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

As a very senior lawyer, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu SAN, was a fervent member of Nigerian Bar Association, the professional body of his chosen profession which he ultimately served as President.
