Nigerians are lamenting the passing of Elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, a former Federal Commissioner of Information and prominent Ijaw leader, whose death at the age of 97, was made public earlier today.

A statement by the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo, Delta State, said the ex-Ijaw leader died on Monday, February 17.

The message says: “The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family.”

Report by Radio Nigeria said “Edwin Clark, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and respected Ijaw leader, led the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), a regional advocacy group championing the rights of the Niger-Delta.

“Clark was a committed advocate of resource control and regional development, dedicating his life to promoting unity among and fighting for the interests of his people.

“He began his political journey in 1953 as a councillor in Bomadi, present-day Delta State, before joining the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC).

“He later served as Commissioner of Education in the Mid-Western Region from 1968 to 1971, and Commissioner for Finance and Establishment in Bendel State from 1972 to 1975.

“Clark’s influence extended to the federal level, where he was Commissioner of Information in 1975 and a Senator from 1979 to 1983.

“Beyond politics, Clark was a mediator and peacemaker in the Niger Delta, known for brokering peace among warring communities and resolving political disputes.

“In 2024, he established a reconciliation committee to ease tensions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike, led by former Akwa Ibom Governor, Obong Victor Attah.

This effort underscored his commitment to stability and unity in the region.”

His death follows the recent passing of Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo at 96.

Both men were key figures in Nigeria’s political landscape, having attended the Greater Nigeria Conference in 2022 to support a Southeast presidential candidate.

Clark’s legacy as a nationalist, freedom fighter, and tireless advocate for the Niger-Delta remains deeply etched in Nigeria’s political history.” (Radio Nigeria)
