NASS Leadership: Akpabio, Abbas Sworn In as Senate President, Speaker

Barau, Kalu, emerge Deputy Senate President, Deputy Speaker Respectively.

Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and former Minority Leader of the Senate, today, Tuesday, June 13, 2023, took oath of office as the Senate President and Chairman of Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly.

Jibrin Barau, representing Kano South Senatorial District, emerged as the Deputy Senate President, unopposed.

In the House of Representatives, Hon Tajudeen Abbas, representing Zaria Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, emerged and was sworn in as the Speaker after defeating Idris Wase and Aminu Jaji.

Hon. Benjamin Kalu, representing Bende Federal Constituency in Abia North, who served as the immediate past Spokesman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, was today elected and sworn in as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Kalu was formally nominated by Hon. Babajimi Benson from Lagos State, seconded by Hon. Khadijat Bukar Abba Ibrahim from Yobe State.

The new Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, was led to take the oath by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal, shortly after Akpabio emerged the winner of a keenly contested race. He beat former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdul’aziz in the race for the third citizen of Nigeria.
