Music legend and One Love crooner, Onyeka Onwenu, is dead. She took her final bow at 72 shortly after a high class performance in Banana Island, Lagos.

Onyeka, always with breathtaking presence, was a global brand named by many organisations as one of the most influential women of her time in Nigeria and Africa.

In the entertainment world, Onyeka, as we fondly call her, was a great singer whose voice united the great and the lowly. She was an informed songwriter who explored the cultural roots of her people and blended them in her music effortlessly.

Even in Nollywood, she proved to be an actress of some repute.

Although the family is yet to release an official statement as at the time of writing this report, earlier reports said the singer “died on Tuesday night after performing at an event at Banana Island, Lagos.”

Born in 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Ms Onyeka Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981.

Amongst her numerous hit songs is “One Love.”

She was also the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

A National Honors awardee, Onyeka was in 2011 awarded Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
