Missing N210tn: Senate Disowns Kyari Arrest Warrant Order, Says Committee Acted Beyond It’s Powers

Nigerian Senate has disowned the arrest warrant earlier issued by one of it’s committees against former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, over an alleged missing 210 trillion Naira probe.
The Senate, after a plenary, said the warrant did not reflect its official position.
It explained that committee actions do not automatically translate to Senate resolutions.
The clarification followed reactions to proceedings of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, which summoned Kyari and other former NNPCL officials over issues arising from the company’s audited accounts.
Senate said its “committees lack authority to issue arrest warrants without approval from the Senate President and compliance with due process.”
The resolutions followed a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele during plenary.
Bamidele had warned that “any attempt by a committee to issue or execute a warrant independently would be unlawful.”
Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, backed the motion, adding that “committees remain subordinate to the chamber.”
According to him, “the committee overstepped its bounds.”
NewsOrient recalls that the root cause of the controversy is the alleged missing N210 trillion said to be unaccounted for within the NNPC Limited accounts.
