After the intrigues that trailed the campaigns for the election of the new executive of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, an intrigue which created so much confusion that the media was deceived into reporting different candidates as the newly elected President-General of the apex Igbo organisation, NewsOrient can now report that the candidate that is finally accepted as the duly elected President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide is Senator John Azuta-Mbata.

Born in January 1960,
John Azuta-Mbata was elected Senator for the Rivers East constituency of Rivers State, Nigeria, in 1999. He contested for the top legislative position then on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He took office on 29 May 1999 and was reelected in April 2003. In all, he served at the Red Chamber in Abuja for eight years, not just as a voiceless senator but as a visible leader who headed some vital committees of the upper house like the Appropriation Committee.

According to a recent post by the Rivers State Government, Sen John Azuta-Mbata is an Ikwerre from Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State.

Besides the five State governors of the Southeast and the Governor of Rivers State, who have officially congratulated Azuta-Mbata for his emergence as the Leader of Ndigbo, other leaders from Igboland and beyond have also formally acknowledged his election.

Described by some who have served with him as a “legal expert,” Azuta-Mbata got his Masters in Public Administration from the University of Ibadan.

He was a member of the Governing Council of Rivers State University of Science & Technology, Port Harcourt.

A businessman of high repute, Senator John Azuta-Mbata is the Chairman/CEO of Monier Construction Company Nigeria Ltd.

Considering his pledges and recent positions in critical political issues that concern Ndigbo, one of the major expectations of keen observers and stakeholders is that under his leadership, Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide is expected to take positive steps to unite all Igbos no matter which state they may find themselves in current Nigeria.
