Former Liberian warlord, Prince Yormie Johnson, is dead.

His family members and officials from his party and the Senate told AFP today, Thursday 28 November 2024, that Johnson died at 72.

Prince Yomie Johnson, who remained in active politics after his roles in the bloody civil wars, was until his death identified as the longest serving Senator and one of the most influential political godfathers in Liberia.

Siaffa Jallah, Deputy Director of Press at the Liberian Senate, was quoted as admitting that much when he confirmed the death today:

NewsOrient reports that Prince Yormie Johnson was a key player in the bloody civil wars that ravaged Liberia between 1989 and 2003.

For example, it was reported that the fighters that crudely tortured the then Liberian President Samuel Doe to death in 1990 were loyal to Yormie Johnson. Not only that, that brutal torture killing of Samuel Doe which deepened Liberian civil wars was reportedly carried out in Johnson’s presence.

Although Johnson later expressed regret for the brutal murder of Doe and sought reconciliation, transforming as a preacher with an evangelical church, international rights advocates never removed his name as one of the war mongers they insisted should face war crime trials.

The controversies surrounding his life notwithstanding, Johnson remained a successful political leader and a godfather in Liberia until his death.

He was identified as a strong force behind most of the political leaders that eventually became elected as Liberian civilian presidents since the 2020s.

With his death, political leadership of Liberia is certain to be under renewed global review. It remains to be seen the final place Liberian and African history will put Prince Yormie Johnson.

Confirming his death today also, Wilfred Bangura, a senior official in Prince Johnson’s Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction Party, told AFP: “Yes, we lost him this morning. He passed away at Hope for Women (health centre)”.
