There was joy in Mpu Community of Enugu State on Wednesday following the return of Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who was jailed in the United Kingdom over a human parts harvest trial.

A report in BBC News confirms Mrs Ekweremadu’s release from the UK prison but said the details of her release is not yet available.

NewsOrient recalls that Mrs Beatrice Ike Ekweremadu was given a four year jail term by United Kingdom court over an organ harvesting case in which her husband, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, and a medical doctor were also convicted and given longer terms.

The matter that led to the imprisonment of the Ekweremadus in UK revolved around their efforts to save the life of their daughter, Sonia, who needed a kidney transplant.

After the well celebrated trial, Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu, her husband, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and a medical doctor, Dr Obinna Obeta, were convicted by the UK court for their various roles in the failed plot to harvest the kidney of a 21-year-old street trader, who they took from Lagos to UK to donate his kidney to Sonia, without telling him in plain language what he was about to do.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu and Dr Obinna Obeta are yet to be released from prison.
