INEC Fails To Open Defence Today Against Peter Obi At Presidential Election Petition Tribunal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), today, Monday, July 3, 2023, failed to open its defence to the allegation by the candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, that the commission, which was supposed to be the electoral umpire, rigged the 2023 Presidential Election.

When the case between Peter Obi, INEC, APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was called up for hearing today, INEC lawyers, led by Mr. Abubakar Mahmoud, SAN, told the court that INEC’s witness was not available. Mahmoud stated specifically that INEC’s first witness was “involved in a domestic issue.”

The commission’s lawyers therefore prayed the court to adjourn the matter until Tuesday.

Since Peter Obi’s lawyers, led by Dr. Livy Uzoukwu, SAN, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s lawyers, led by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, and APC’s lawyers, led by Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, did not oppose the application for an adjournment, the Justice Haruna Tsammani-led five-member panel of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), sitting in Abuja, adjourned the matter to Tuesday.

NewsOrient Network reports that the Presidential Election Petition Court resumed its proceedings today so that the electoral body can call its first witness to justify its declaration of the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the winner of the Presidential Election that held on February 25, 2023.
