I hope Buhari will respect any judicial decision on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu – Lawyer
Barrister Alloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed hope that if the court eventually releases Nnamdi Kanu, President Muhammadu Buhari will respect and accept such a decision.
Ejimakor expressed the view while responding to President Buhari’s recent ChannelTV remarks on the prospects of an executive decision to release Nnamdi Kanu.
Asked if he would release Kanu, Buhari had said pointedly: “We cannot release Nnamdi Kanu. There is no political solution to it. His case is for the judiciary. One of the things I promised myself is never to interfere with the jobs of the judiciary. I have given him the opportunity to defend himself.
“Kanu has been insulting us. He has been giving incorrect figures and comments against us. He needs to account for what he did.”
Responding to Mr President’s position, Ejimakor, in a statement released today, said,
“Whereas Buhari appeared to have dimmed the prospects of an executive decision to release Kanu, he also stated that he has left the decision to the judiciary. Recall that this is not the first time Buhari had said such a thing. He had said the same thing to Chief Mbazulike Amaechi several weeks ago. My hope is that the day will soon come when Buhari will be held to his implied promises to respect any judicial decision on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whether it is a bail, a mistrial or outright release from detention,” Ejimakor said.
