I Feel Guilty Over My Parent’s Imprisonment, Sonia Ekweremadu Cries

Sonia Ike Ekweremadu, daughter of former Nigeria Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, could not hold back her tears as she said she feels guilty over her parents’ imprisonment in Britain, because according her, “I feel all these have happened because of me.”

NewsOrient reported yesterday that a London court sentenced Sonia’s father, Ike, to nine years, eight months jail term, her mother, Beatrice, to four years, six months imprisonment and the doctor, Obinna Obeta, that acted as the middleman, for 10 years imprisonment.

Responding to the development, Sonia told the BBC that as a daughter, even if her views would be seen as biased by some, she disagrees with the conviction of her parents, but added that judgement must however take its course and so the family will have to move on.

On how she is coping with the development, Sonia said: “It’s sad. It’s been really hard to wrap my head around it. I understand the conviction, however, I personally disagree with it. That is from a very biased perspective as their daughter, I will obviously always back my parents.

“However, the law has taken its course, we just need to move on as one family,” she said.

Sonia, who is currently undergoing dialysis, was also on trial alongside her parents but was not convicted.

On the man who was to donate his kidney to her, Sonia said simply that she was not involved in the process.

“I didn’t have a hand in it; it was mostly my family that handled everything about my medical side,” she said.

“I don’t think things will ever be the same again. And obviously, I feel guilty because I feel all these have happened because of me,” she added, while holding back tears.
