Amnesty International on Tuesday faulted the reaction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s aides over the planned nationwide protest against bad governance and hunger in Nigeria.
Amnesty International said threatening of peaceful protesters by the federal government and it’s officials “was not only unlawful but a clear attack on freedom of assembly as guaranteed by international law and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Perhaps the latest open threat from Federal Government top officials against Nigerians for daring to say they are hungry was from the Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, who warned Nigerians planning nationwide protests against hardship in the country “to stay off the streets.”
Olusegun, echoing the combative stance of many other top aides of President Tinubu threatened that “supporters of President Tinubu would resist any attempt to ”burn down the country.”
He added that “President Tinubu’s supporters are waiting for the protesters.”
Reacting to these threats, Amnesty International on Tuesday said “Threatening peaceful protesters is unlawful. It is a clear attack on freedom of assembly — which is guaranteed by international law and Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.”
