Holds Meeting On The #EndBadGovernance Protest With Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa SAN, Today

As the pressure mounts over the planned hunger protest in Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has changed tactics as he orders Nigerian Police leaders to protect intending participants of the planned #EndBadGovernance protest slated for August 1 to 10, 2024.

The change of tactics was made public on Monday through a letter the IGP wrote to a human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa SAN, who, on behalf of human rights group, formally demanded police protection for protesters from the IGP.

It would be recalled that the IGP last week insisted that he would not order police protection of intending protesters unless “the names of the leaders of the protest and other details of intending participants of the forthcoming protest” were first made available to him.

Angry Nigerians, fearless youths and human rights activists had openly rejected such a condition from Security Operatives, insisting that protest is one of Nigerian citizens’ fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution.

The youths also added that they do not have human leaders but that they are led to protest by hunger and suffering in the land, occasioned by bad governance in Nigeria.

This disagreement between Nigerian security agencies and the people has helped to heighten fears that the planned nationwide hunger protest may be mismanaged.

But with the IGP’s sudden change of tactics, as expressed in the letter he addressed to human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa SAN, on Monday, it seems the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government is now set to allow the planned August nationwide hunger protest to hold peacefully.

The referred IGP’s response letter to Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa SAN, dated July 29, 2024, was signed by IGP’s Principal Staff Officer, CP Johnson Adenola.

The letter reads in part: ” I am to inform you that the Inspector General of Police has directed the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (Operations and Intelligence), the Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) in charge of Zonal Police Headquarters and the Commissioners of Police (CPs) in charge of State Commands across the country to attend to your request.

“I am to also inform you that the Inspector General of Police wishes to have a meeting with you at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, 30th July 2024 to deliberate further on your request.”
