How 22 Kano Athletes Died In Road Accident After Sports Festival

It has been revealed how a road crash along the Kano–Kaduna highway yesterday, Saturday, May 31, 2025, claimed the lives of 22 people, according to officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Reacting to the tragedy, Kano State Government has declared Monday, June 2, 2025 a public holiday to mourn the dead.

A statement released by the FRSC Sector Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, on Saturday, said a total of 32 persons were confirmed to be involved in the crash, comprising thirty-one male adults and one female adult.

Labaran said: “We regret to announce a fatal road traffic crash that occurred today, Saturday 31st May, 2025, at approximately 1230hrs along the Kano–Kaduna Road, precisely at Gadar Yankifi in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.

“The unfortunate crash involved a single vehicle, a Toyota Coaster Bus with registration number KN041 A17, belonging to the Kano State Government,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has declared Monday, June 2, 2025, as a public holiday to mourn and sympathise with the families of the 22 young athletes, coaches, and officials, who died in the ghastly auto crash while returning from the just-concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

Governor Abba Yusuf, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj, described the accident as a “dark moment” for the state,” adding that the accident claimed the lives of some of Kano’s most promising youths.

In a statement on Saturday and signed by Governor Abba Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, the governor expressed deep sorrow and extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the entire sports community.

He said: “It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured.”
