Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, vibrated a unique rhythm today as the six months emergency rule imposed on the state by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, comes to an end.

With Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu’s return to power, the South-South state is poised to grapple with the cracks on the walls of it’s democratic structure.

NewsOrient reports that beyond the excitement being exhibited today by Fubara’s supporters and other lovers of democracy in Nigeria, deep rooted fears and confusion now haunt majority of the people in the highly volatile state.

It would be recalled that Fubara and his deputy had been away from the governance of the state for six months, after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, citing a political crisis in the state between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike.

In Fubara’s stead, Tinubu appointed Retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator of the state.

Ibas’ six months in office as Sole Administrator of Rivers State recorded unending intrigues, including the controversies that surrounded the local government election it supervised, which pronounced All Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner of 20, out of the 23 local government areas of the state.

Following the outcome of the local government election, amongst other subsisting intrigues, it is feared that today’s end of emergency rule and Fubara’s return may not be the end of the political crisis that has trailed Rivers State since the former Governor and Serving Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike fell out with his erstwhile political son, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

However, while handing over the reins of power on Wednesday night, the former Sole Administrator, Retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, in a broadcast, pleaded with political actors in Rivers State to “embrace mutual respect and dialogue.”

President Tinubu, while declaring an end to the emergency rule on Wednesday evening, said “the crisis would have created anarchy if emergency rule had not been proclaimed on March 18, 2025.”
