EFCC Frees Obiano, Withholds His Passport

The Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally released former Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, from it’s facility where he had been detained since last week.

His international passport was however withheld, NewsOrient learnt.

Obiano breathed air of freedom on Wednesday and promptly rejoined his family in Aguleri, Anambra State.

It would be recalled that the former governor was arrested on Thursday, March 17 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, as he was preparing to board a flight to Houston, the United States of America just few hours after handing over power as governor to Professor Charles Soludo.

NewsOrient reported earlier that the commission has since granted Obiano an administrative bail but it took him days to meet his bail conditions.

EFCC top officials had been quoted as alleging that “Obiano was arrested for alleged misappropriation of public funds, including, N5 billion Sure-P and N37 billion security vote which was withdrawn in cash. Part of the funds was also allegedly diverted to finance political activities in the state,” EFCC’s spokesperson, Uwujaren said
