Ebonyi: Tension As Akaeze Youths Protest Nnaogo’s Death

 

The tension that has been building up in Akaeze community in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State subsequent upon the killing of a youth in the area, allegedly by operatives of Ebubeagu Security operatives, has taken a new turn as enraged youths took to the streets, setting properties ablaze.

It would be recalled that the youth that was killed, Nnaogo Akpoke Anyim, was reportedly accused by some Ebubeagu operatives in the area “of stealing some bamboo tree from the community.”

It was reported that Nnaogo was arrested and allegedly tortured to death by Ebubeagu operatives.

A video clip that went viral on social media, which showed how Nnaogo was tortured to death, raised tension within and outside the community. The tension peaked at the weekend as the youths went on rampage, took to the streets to protest the murder of their colleague. Unfortunately, in the confusion, two more youths were shot to death, allegedly by security operatives.

Also, a filling station, houses belonging to some Ebubeagu members in the community and some other properties were reportedly torched.

As at today, Tuesday, villagers said the situation has escalated so much that “armed military men have taken over the community in an attempt to prevent further violence.”
