Court Orders INEC To Deregister ADC, 4 Other Parties As Atiku Names Amaechi His Running Mate

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.
The other political parties affected by the order are the Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
This is coming even as The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has finally announced former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its Presidential Candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 General Elections.
Relying on the provisions of Section 225A of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Plaintiff had argued that “the five parties had consistently failed to meet the conditions for retaining their registration, including “securing at least 25 percent of votes in a state during a presidential election or winning elective positions at the national, state, or local government levels.”
On Amaechi’s appointment as Atiku’s running mate, ADC said the decision was a result of “wide consultations.”
NewsOrient reports that both the court’s ruling and Amaechi’s emergence as Atiku’s running mate are poised to cause fresh ripples in the already intriguing Nigerian political theatre ahead of the 2027 Elections.
