From Kelechi Udude

As the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham ends today, Nigeria has 12 Gold Medals to celebrate.

Thanks to Nigeria women athletes who hauled all 12 Gold Medals in athletes, the highest in Nigeria’s 15th appearances at the Games.

NewsOrient checks today show that Nigerians are proud of their sportsmen and women for this year’s Commonwealth Games though Nigeria did not reach the finals in events like Table Tennis, Hockey, Badminton and Squash.

Nigerian women athletes were particularly superlative as all gold medals were won by the women team, who added six silver and eight bronze medals.

Nigerian sportsmen also got three silver and six bronze medals.

In all Nigeria got 35 medals (12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze) in Birmingham to emerge the third best performance in the Games.

It would be recalled that in 1994 edition in Victoria, Nigeria got 37 medals (11-13-13).

In Glasgow in 2014, Nigeria got (11, 11, 14).

This year’s performance is the most remarkable outing in terms of goal medals – 12, as against 11 in 1994 and 2014.
