Representatives of the National Boundary Commission (NBC) from Osun and Oyo States have taken steps to address the lingering boundary crisis between the Ifon and Surulere communities in the two neighbouring states.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a stakeholders’ meeting was held on Thursday in Surulere, Oyo State, with the attendance of government representatives from both states, officials of the boundary commissions, and other members of the boundary committee.

Speaking at the meeting, the Osun Chairman of the National Boundary Commission, Justice Kunle Adeigbe, said the engagement was aimed at finding a lasting solution to the boundary dispute affecting the Ifon and Surulere communities.

Adeigbe said the Osun State Government became aware of the crisis and took decisive steps to address the issue promptly in order to prevent further escalation.

According to him, peaceful coexistence remains a critical pillar for growth and development, especially in developing communities such as Ifon and Surulere.

“We need to come together to address the issues on ground by resolving the boundary dispute and working collectively for the peace and progress of the people,” he said.

Adeigbe noted that while the National Boundary Commission in Abuja has the final authority on boundary matters, it was important for the affected communities and states to seek a compromise before the commission makes a final determination.

“We are interested in peace, and that is why we are here to understand what next to do and to avoid any form of violence that could endanger lives and property,” he added.

He further explained that the boundary commission does not intervene in disputes that are already before the courts, in order to maintain transparency and public trust.

The chairman said that the local government chairmen of the affected areas should come together with their traditional rulers in both communities to see how farming activities can continue on the disputed demarcated areas .

Adeigbe, therefore, said his visit to Surulere was to encourage both communities to resolve the crisis amicably and prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Earlier, the representative of the Oyo State Boundary Commission and Surveyor-General of Oyo State, Mr Soji Oyewale, said constructive dialogue was essential in reaching a final resolution to the dispute.

Oyewale said the boundary crisis could be resolved if all parties agreed to give peace a chance and embrace unity between the affected communities.

He advised residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, stressing that the governments of both states had established boundary committees to handle such matters.

According to him, wherever there is boundary crisis ,there can never be development and investors will not want to come and invest there .

” Oyo and Osun is claiming the boundary in question but the national boundary Commission will address the issue peacefully without any rancour .

” Let us follow due process in addressing this issue and once the national boundary Commission finalised it , everyone will be happy .

“Farmers should continue their farming without any hindrances and if anyone stop such people is like taking laws into their hands, he said .

Also, the chairman of surulere community, Mr Adegbite Isaiah , called on both communities to live in peace and give chance to the authorities to take the right actions .

Isaiah charged the boundary Commission of both states to expedite actions towards ensuring that the crisis is resolved finally .

NAN reports that legal representatives from both communities submitted boundary documents during the meeting to support their respective claims.

A representative of the Ifon community, Mr Olasupo Aderemi, said Ifon shared boundaries with several communities without crisis, expressing hope that the current dispute with Surulere would be resolved promptly.

Aderemi added that relevant boundary documents had already been submitted to the Osun State Government to substantiate Ifon’s claim.

Also speaking, a representative of the Surulere community, Mr Ade Adekunle, alleged that residents had been chased from their homes by unknown assailants from Ifon.

Adekunle said the Surulere boundary appealed to the commission to assist displaced residents to return to their homes and resume their farming and businesses.
