Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has openly defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid to contest the 2026 Election, arguing that the President deserves to be re-elected into office because, according to him, he “has stabilised the country’s economy.”
Shettima gave the defence when he formally submitted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the 2027 Presidential Election to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee in Abuja on Thursday, May 7 2026.
This formal submission follows the initial purchase of the ₦100 million forms on 28 April 2026 by James Faleke, who reportedly acted on behalf of the President and his various support groups.
Addressing party leadership, Vice President Shettima described the administration’s first term as “a period of necessary hardship required for long-term recovery.”
He said of President Tinubu: “The storms of the past years have not diminished him; they have made a fine steel out of him…
“He has steered this ship through turbulent waters with courage, taking difficult but necessary decisions to stabilise the economy, restore confidence, and prepare Nigeria for a more sustainable future.”
Present at the event were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chairman of APC Governors Forum, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, APC National Working Committee members amongst other stakeholders.
