heartwarming moment involving a seven-year-old girl and Peter Obi stole the spotlight during a tense protest in Abuja on Wednesday, drawing attention away from the charged political atmosphere.

The protest, attended by several prominent opposition figures, was organised to express dissatisfaction with the handling of Nigeria’s democracy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Among those present were Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, and Aminu Tambuwal, who arrived with their supporters in a show of unity.

However, the defining moment of the day came when a young girl broke through the crowd and approached Obi, creating a scene that briefly overshadowed the political speeches and demonstrations.

Eyewitnesses said the child, who had no placard and chanted no slogans, slipped away from her parents and ran toward the former Anambra State governor. She hugged him tightly, catching security aides off guard.

Obi, however, signalled for calm and allowed the girl to come close. Bending down to her level on the streets of Maitama, he engaged her in a brief conversation.

When asked what she wanted to say, the girl replied simply: “Thank you for fighting for us.”

The statement drew attention from those around, many of whom paused to witness the exchange. The girl reportedly said she had seen Obi on television and expressed hope for a better future.

Obi, in response, encouraged her to remain focused on her education, obey her parents, and remain hopeful, assuring her that ongoing efforts were aimed at building a country where children would not need to participate in protests.

Observers noted that the interaction highlighted the extent to which political developments are resonating even with younger Nigerians.

The protest, though marked by strong criticism of government policies and electoral processes, momentarily took on a softer tone as the emotional exchange unfolded.

As the girl was reunited with her parents, Obi was seen watching her leave, reflecting a mix of concern and resolve.

The incident has since been widely described by participants as a powerful reminder of the human dimension behind Nigeria’s political struggles, particularly the hopes of younger generations for a better future.
