The Benue State Government has commenced the evacuation of its indigenes studying at the University of Jos following the recent deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba and the surrounding areas of Jos, Plateau State.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, Governor Hyacinth Alia said the decision was taken to safeguard the lives and welfare of Benue students amid rising tensions in the state capital.
“Following the recent attack on Angwan Rukuba and surrounding areas, which claimed lives and triggered widespread tension in Jos, Governor Hyacinth Alia on Thursday, April 2, 2026, commenced evacuation of students of Benue origin studying at the University of Jos back to Benue State,” the statement read.
The governor added that “the directive became necessary given the deteriorating security situation, particularly for young people studying far from home.
“Governor Alia, who ordered the immediate evacuation, says it became necessary as it concerns the lives and welfare of his people, especially future leaders studying far from home,” Kula added.
According to the statement, “more than 600 students have already been successfully evacuated, while additional buses have been deployed to transport the remaining students and other willing Benue State indigenes back to Benue.
The statement further explained that Benue State’s decision “follows the decision by the University of Jos management to suspend first semester examinations and order students to vacate hostels and other residential areas with effect from Thursday, April 2, 2026.”
NewsOrient reports that the closure of the university was as a result of a deadly attack on Sunday, March 29, 2026, during which gunmen opened fire at a busy junction in Jos, killing at least 28 people, including students and staff of the institution.
