In the French city of Lyon, on Saturday, 14th March, 2026, Nigeria’s D’Tigress, the African champions in Women Basketball, were 51–42 down at halftime but showed what reporters described as “character and attacking intensity to overturn the deficit” and to beat the Philippines 101–84.

It was their third game at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament.

Commentators say “the result is a huge boost for Nigeria, following their 77–60 loss to the Koreans in their second match.”

The D’Tigress started the game “poorly as they trailed 26-21” in the first quarter. As at that stage, the Philippines were fully in charge. Nigeria’s defence was glaringly weak and Philippines took advantage of it.

But Nigeria’s D’Tigress, the multiple-time African champions, soon bounced back.

NewsOrient reports that the final turning point for D’Tigress came in the third quarter, as they effectively used speed to fully dominate the game, resulting in a 34–21 win.

As Channels Television’s reports explained, “though Nigeria have qualified for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup after winning a historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket title last year, this tournament serves as preparation for the competition billed for Germany later in 2026”.
