Following yesterday’s coup attempt in Benin Republic, security sources say many soldiers, including suspected ring leaders have been arrested.
AFP put the number of arrested soldiers as at Sunday evening to over a dozen.
We gathered that the number of arrests is expected to increase as investigation commences.
This is even as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government of Nigeria, who promptly deployed military jets to help foil the coup in the neighbouring country, condemned military intervention, describing it as “a direct assault on democracy.”
The arrests of the suspected coup plotters came after military personnel in Benin on Sunday announced that they had ousted President Patrice Talon.
It was reported thus: “Soldiers calling themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR), said on state television that they had met and decided that “Mr Patrice Talon is removed from office as president of the republic”.
What followed was a period of confusion as the entourage of the President of Benin Republic soon announced that “President Talon was safe and that the army was regaining control.”
Patrice Talon has been President of the West African nation for 10 years and is due to step down in April, 2026.
