The leadership of Item Development Association (IDA) and those of the nine villages came together on Monday, September 15, 2025 to relaunch the Item Central Vigilante.

According to a statement from the association, “the event, which took place at Amaeke Item Civic Centre, had the members of new central vigilante outfit and all the vigilante outfits in all villages of Item present.

“Some other notable leaders in Item also graced the occasion.”

The statement added: “It is pertinent to report that all the Presidents-General of the nine Item Okpi villages attended the event physically. They are:

Chief Ebere Ali Agwu (Amaeke Item). He is the Chairman of the Forum of Item PG’s.

Prince Harrison Eze Okorie (Amaokwe Item).

Chief Ogechukwu Kalu (Okoko Item).

Dr. James Obioma (Apuanu Item).

Hon. Isaac O. Isaac (Akanu Item).

Mazi Ogechukwu Samuel Ogba (Okai Item).

Chief Ogechi Ben (Okagwe Item).

Hon. Nnanna Kalu (Amaekpu Item).

Chief David Ogbonnaya (Umuakpaeme Item).

Chief Franklyn Okoji Nmaju – Former PG of Amaokwe and currently serving as the Forum of village PG’s liaison in the IDA Executive Committee.”

The statement also said “the historic event was Presided over by the PG of IDA and the Chairman of the Forum of the PG’s of the nine villages.

“The participation of all the PG’s of the nine villages underscores the commitment of the leadership and indeed citizens of all the villages of Item to support and work for the sustenance of the new security initiative..”

It also said the Item Central Vigilante outfit has been revamped with new recruits, more equipment and leadership.

“The operational headquarters of the outfit situates in Amaeke Item, where a sizeable office space was mapped out for it’s use at the very magnificent Amaeke Item Civic Centre,” it said, adding: “The PG of IDA has also promised the donation of an operational/patrol van to the outfit in due course as he seeks to further engage some key stakeholders to support the new outfit.

Mr. Eke Okoye of Akanu Item and Mr. Chidiebere Onuoha of Amaokwe were elected as Commander and Deputy Commander respectively, through a transparent electoral process involving all members of the outfit who voted among themselves to choose their leaders.

Mr. Azubuike Igwe of Apuanu Item was announced by the PG of IDA as the Secretary of the outfit.

The reorganized team took an OATH OF ALLEGIANCE to serve Item Okpi Kingdom diligently while pledging to discharge their tasks with utmost honesty and in ensuring that justice is dispensed without fear or favour at all times.

The relaunch ceremony marked a new era for the Item Central Vigilante, being a significant milestone in the community’s pursuit of peace, security, and development.

With this revamped outfit, stakeholders look forward to witnessing their impact in the area of security of lives and property in the community,” the statement said.
