Former Secretary to Abia State Government (SSG), Chief Ralph Egbu, has explained why he resigned from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), joined the Labour Party and endorsed Governor Alex Otti for the 2027 Governorship Election in Abia State.
In a resignation letter dully signed by him and handed over to the Oza Ukwu ward chairman, in Ukwa West Local Government Area, Bidwell Nwankwo, Egbu said his decision was influenced by the directives of his constituents and the good performance of Governor Alex Otti in the past two years.
Speaking to the press on his reasons for dumping PDP for the Labour Party, Chief Egbu openly identified the different factors that influenced the move to include: directives from his constituents and personal resolve to sustain, establish and promote “good and effective governance wherever it is found around the country.”
According to Chief Egbu, “Governor Alex Otti has in two years shown glimpses of very positive and effective governance culture.
“It behoves any truly progressive minded person, especially those either living or doing business in the state, to line their support behind the Governor and the government he leads.
“The alternative of not doing so would mean that revisionists, whose stock in trade is to reap huge gains from chaos would slip in to retard the wheels of progress.
“Neutrality or nonchalance helps the mediocre, while evil grows into a monstrous dimension when good men stay and do nothing,” Chief Egbu explained.
The former SSG, a veteran journalist, who also served Abia as a two -time Commissioner for Information was also Chief Press Secretary to many State governments in Abia, starting from Military Administrators to civilian democratically elected government in Abia State.
On Otti’s performance, Egbu said: “Governor Otti has recorded very meaningful achievements, I am thrilled by the fact that he chose to begin from basic challenges that rob people of having good life.
“Under the administration, democratic temperament has been expanded, while salaries are being paid as at when due, life restored to pensioners, sanitary conditions and waste management greatly improved, massive infrastructural turn around, employments as well as the airport and stadium projects going on.
“Everybody is a witness to the renovations in our schools and free and compulsory basic education, retrofitting of hospitals and the construction of Abia Medica City that is about to be flagged among other numerous achievements of Governor Alex Otti, OFR.” Chief Egbu noted.
He noted that “the Governor does not claim to know everything or is immune to mistakes,” saying that once it is pointed out he would accept, correct it and move on.”
Report from Chosen Generation, the Media Directorate of Chief Ralph Egbu, quoted Chief Egbu as telling the leadership of his political structure, who gathered at his country home in Umuiku, Ukwa West LGA Abia State on Saturday May 31, 2025 for briefing and decision on new political alignment, that his “Asa people are very much appreciative of the good works of the Governor in Ukwa West.
He reportedly said: “I am glad that the Governor has shown that Ukwa people would have a far better deal in terms of development and representation under the present administration.
“We assure the Governor that Ukwa people would join the rest of the good people of the state and give him maximum support from now going forward.”
According to the report, all his loyalists agreed to join Governor Alex Otti’s Labour Party.
Making public his decision to drop his 2027 governorship ambition in order to support Governor Alex Otti, Chief Egbu, also offered his reasons for taking such critical decision he said his constituents played visible role in the development.
He said in a radio interview: “Monday 2/6/25, I returned to Umuahia from Umuiku my village in Asa land, Ukwa West LGA Abia State where for days running I have engaged with my other kith and kin to try to fashion out a new political pathway for my people in the new dispensation and straight to Rapid FM where I was to be interviewed on the two years of Gov Alex Otti.
“The very knowledgeable anchor, Ben Moses and Ike Ogbonna replayed the Governor’s statement of his efforts so far where he said,” we are not yet where we should be but we are not where we were before”. They asked me”Ralph what do you think”?
“I didn’t waste time telling them Gov Alex Otti’s position is a” statement of fact and truth”. I continued,”he has done enough in just two years to merit a second term, his sound bites are germane and qualitative in content, they capture what would be required to move the state into a modern age, he has given us great democratic atmosphere, we see excellent efforts at infrastructural turn around, we all can attest to very serious attempts to reposition the educational system, pushing for a virile civil service with renovation of secretariat, prompt payment of salaries, promotion via written exams and oral interview, pension payments, airport, stadium and improvement in sanitation.
“Like every human endeavor, there are mistakes in a few areas but those are mistakes of the head and not the heart; with good advice from well meaning statesmen like me, those faultlines can be straightened out quickly.
“I told my audience I was shelving my Governorship Ambition in 2027. I will be going after something else. When someone does what you intend, support him, politics isn’t business, it is service and that’s the way I see it. God has asked me to do so because evil is like a storm; it comes with so much force, evil thrives when good men, always in majority, stay and do nothing.
I line my full support behind Governor Alex Otti and request all lovers of Ralph Egbu to do so without delay.
“Abia State and Ndigbo deserve the best. We owe ourselves responsibility to develop our space, make it both habitable and productive enclave for generations yet unborn,” Chief Ralph Egbu said.
