“Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach. He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism.

“He brought joy to millions, mentored a generation of footballers, and stood as a pillar of Nigerian brand and sportsmanship on and off the pitch.”

These are the words of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he joined other Nigerians and fans of the football icon in Africa and across the world to mourn the passing of Christian Chukwu, fondly called ‘Chairman,’ on Saturday, April 12 2025.

President Tinubu, in a statement by the Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Ononuga, said Christian Chukwu’s “legacies will continue to live on in the trophies he won, the lives he touched, and the exciting moments he provided to football fans and spectators on the field and in the technical area.

“We are forever grateful for his contributions to the sport we all love, and we will always remember him with great respect and admiration,” the President stated.

NewsOrient reports that Christian Chukwu, Nigerian football icon, nicknamed ‘Chairman’ because of his imposing presence and firm control of the beautiful game all through his great career, died on Saturday, 12th April 2025, at the age of 74.

Chukwu captained the national team, then named the Green Eagles of Nigeria to the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations victory and later coached the Super Eagles, which won a bronze medal at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.

Apart from his leadership of Nigeria’s national team as Captain and later Coach, ‘Chairman’ Chukwu devoted most of his club career to Enugu Rangers, where he won multiple titles and led the club to continental glory with their 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.

As Nigerians contemplate the news of his passing, most lovers of football say ‘Chairman’ Chukwu will no doubt be remembered as one of the greatest football greats in Nigeria.
