The sudden barricade of the Palace of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi 11, today, has become a source of a raging controversy.

While some people allege that the matter could be traced to the complex politics of Kano State and that of the Kano Emirate Council, others allege Federal Government’s interest following alleged position believed to have been taken by the Emir over the controversial Tax Reform Bills.

Observers could not believe their eyes early this morning when heavily armed security operatives blocked the palace and restricted the Emir from attending a scheduled presentation of a staff of office to a newly appointed District Head of Bichi, in Bichi Local Government Area of the State.

A report in Channels Television had quoted a source in the Kano Emirate as confirming the presence of “heavily armed security personnel, including armoured personnel carriers (APCs) who barricaded the entrance of the Emir’s palace, restricting all movement.”

We also learnt that during the siege, the Emir made telephone calls to either ascertain the reason for the development or ensure he was allowed to attend the scheduled event.

Following the way the operation was carried out, there have been conflicting speculations as to who was behind the development or why the siege was ordered.

Sources at the Palace told NewsOrient that “everyone in the Palace feared the worst may have happened when we noticed that the heavily armed security operatives did not also allow Kano State top officials who tried to access the palace during that siege.”

According to Daily Trust report, Kano State Government has therefore accused the Federal Government of Nigeria of being behind the blockade of Kano Emir’s palace.

It said Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was billed to address some economists on the controversy generated by the tax reforms bills before the National Assembly.

The Police however reportedly refused to give out information on why it took the action.
