Following concerns expressed by Northern states Governors and other stakeholders in Nigeria, over the details of four executive bills on tax reforms, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Justice and the National Assembly to take a second look at the proposed bills before passing them into law.

NewsOrient has reported earlier that there have been sharp criticisms against Tinubu’s transmission of the said Tax Reform Bills to the National Assembly for passage into law.

Most vocal criticisms against the details of the bills included northern state governors, who said the bills, if passed into law as they are will shortchange the North.

Opposition prime voice, Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate for the 2023 Elections, had also demanded for critical review of the issues involved by all stakeholders before passage of the bills into law.

Responding to the concerns, President Tinubu has asked the Ministry of Justice to review the details of the bills with the National Assembly with the view of resolving the areas that occasion the concerns.

Tinubu spoke in a statement released on Tuesday by the Federal Government by the Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris.

He said: “It is pertinent to state that the government has nothing sinister to warrant the suggestion that the process is being rushed. In line with the established legislative procedure, the Federal General welcomes meaningful inputs that can address whatever grey areas there may be in the bill.

“In this vein, President Tinubu has already directed the Federal Ministry of Justice and relevant officials who worked on the drafts to work closely with the National Assembly to ensure that all genuine concerns have been addressed before the bills are passed.”

Mohammed said President Tinubu described the debate generated by the bills as “welcomed, and commendable”.

The Minister said: “It is very inspiring to see Nigerians from all walks of life coming out to express their views and opinions on these matters of critical national importance. This is the very essence and meaning of democracy.

“In the spirit of democratic engagement, there should be no room for name-calling or the injection of unnecessary ethnic and regional slurs into this important national conversation.”

The minister added that contrary to fears being expressed, “the fiscal reforms will not impoverish any state or region of the country, neither will they lead to the scrapping or weakening of any federal agencies.”
