The Senate, today, Wednesday 25th September 2024, confirmed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

She was also screened today by Nigerian senators.

With the confirmation, Kekere-Ekun has become the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“I am known for integrity and discipline, I will ensure zero tolerance for corruption,” Kekere-Ekun told Senators during her screening.

Earlier today, NewsOrient had reported that
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Senate, praying for confirmation of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, first read President Tinubu’s letter during plenary on Tuesday.

In the letter, Tinubu cited Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers him to appoint the CJN based on recommendations from the National Judicial Council, pending Senate approval.

The President expressed confidence in her nomination and urged the Senate to act urgently.

It would be recalled that Justice Kekere-Ekun has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria since August this year when the former CJN, Justice Ayo Arewola retired.

To swear in Justice Kekere-Ekun as Acting CJN then, President Tinubu had to cut short temporarily a foreign trip.
