How INEC Declared APC’s Monday Okpebholo, Winner of Edo Governorship Election

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo, the winner of the Edo State Governorship Election held on Saturday.

NewsOrient reports that the declaration was made by INEC’s Returning Officer for the election, Faruk Kuta, at the State Collation Centre in Benin City on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile opposition and other stakeholders in the Edo politics have been reacting to the development. While the opposition said the declared result was a sham, a product desperate state capture, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his party, the All Progressives Congress said to their victory is a confirmation of people’s acceptance of Tinubu-led Federal Government’s renewal policy.

The declared results from 18 local government areas (LGAs) announced by INEC said Okpebholo got a total of 291,667 votes to emerge winner.

It said APC candidate also won in 11 of the state’s 18 local government areas.

Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to the declaration, got 247,655 votes to emerge second, while
Olumide Akpata, of Labour Party (LP), came third with a total of 22,763 votes.

Based on these, INEC, through Mr Kuta, declared: “That Monday Okpebholo of the APC, having satisfied all the requirements of law and scored majority of the lawful votes, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”
