Two key unions in Nigerian university system have threatened to shut down universities over non payment of salaries of their members.

The unions are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU).

According to a report sourced from Channels Television, they gave the threat through a statement from their joint action committee in which they “threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if their outstanding salaries are not paid within three weeks.”

They issued the threat in a statement jointly signed by SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi.

The statement was, according to the report, obtained by Channels Television on Wednesday.

The 10-day grace period given to the Federal Government to pay the four months of outstanding salaries to university staff expired on 26th July 2024., the unions said.
