Bassirou Diomaye Faye was today, Tuesday, 2nd April 2024 sworn in as Senegal’s new President.
Aged 44, Bassirou Diomaye Faye is the current youngest President of an African country.
At his inauguration, Faye promised far reaching reforms. He said: “Before God and the Senegalese nation, I swear to faithfully fulfil the office of President of the Republic of Senegal.”
As a new political leader in Africa, Faye, described in the media as a “pan-Africanist leftwinger,” caught wide attention when he won his country’s Presidential Election, barely days after his release from prison.
It is also interesting to note that until his election as President, Faye had no prior experience as an elected office holder.
Because of these unique qualities, there is special expectation that his emergence as President will mark a new era not only in Senegal but also in whole of Africa.
Reports confirmed that several African leaders, including Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, attended the ceremony in the new town of Diamniadio, near the Senegalese capital, Dakar.
