Violence Mar Governorship Elections In Lagos, Ebonyi, Others
– Thugs Chase Away Non-Yoruba Voters In Oshodi, Amuwo Odifin Lagos, Set BVAS On Fire In Ebonyi
Armed thugs attacked many voters today, thus disrupting the ongoing Governorship Election in some states of the Federation.
NewsOrient reports that in Lagos, the attackers wielded iron rods and sticks, when they invaded polling units in wards at Ajao Estate in Oshodi-Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
Reporters who monitored the election said that in these wards, voters came out very early, some, as early as 7am, and waited for the arrival of electoral officials up to 9am.
However, when the armed thugs arrived the wards unhindered by security operatives, helpless voters had no option than to scamper away for safely.
The attack on some targetted voters in Lagos during this governorship election was expected.
This is because days before today’s elections, hoodlums boldly went round in open places and house to house in Lagos communities and warned voters, especially Igbo voters who they alleged will not vote for Governor SanwoOlu, not to come to the voting locations in Lagos today. But because all voters, including Igbo youths in Lagos were eager to participate in the electoral process, everyone expected this ugly development notwithstanding promises and assurances of safety by government officials and security agencies.
Also in Ebonyi State, political thugs disrupted elections at Omege ward in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Omege ward is the polling unit of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Gubernatorial candidate in the State, Professor Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh.
Reports have it that “the thugs who came to the polling unit, shot sporadically into the air and injured three people who are currently at the hospital. They also destroyed electoral materials including the BVAS machine.”
